What White Buffalo really is
People call it white turquoise, but genuine White Buffalo is not turquoise. It is a creamy white stone (dolomite) shot through with black chert, found at the Dry Creek Mine near Tonopah, Nevada. The Otteson family brought it to jewelers in 1993. Blue turquoise gets its color from copper. White Buffalo has magnesium instead, so it stays snow-white with a black spiderweb. The name honors the rare white buffalo, a sign of peace and new beginnings in Plains traditions.
White howlite and magnesite are often sold under the same name. Real White Buffalo is the tight black web on a white ground, and it is softer than blue turquoise.
The stone in this ring is simulated White Buffalo — simulated turquoise cut in that white-and-black look, set in 925 sterling silver. Same Southwestern look you can wear every day. Read the full White Buffalo story.
